PARKER-TORRES DESIGN FOLLOWS CURRENT OF POTOMAC AT INTERCONTINENTAL D.C.
| Washington, D.C. - May, 2018 | Parker-Torres Design was charged with creating the property-wide interiors at the newly constructed, 278 room InterContinental D.C. at the Wharf, a luxury hotel in what is growing to be one of the capital’s most exciting neighborhoods. Located on the coveted shores of the Potomac River, the Wharf area is an important part of the city’s history, an area George Washington himself urged be developed many years ago to link America with the West. Now, with a masterplanner and 11 architects, the city is heeding his word by redeveloping the area and bringing D.C. back to its greatest natural resource: its gorgeous waterfront. Parker-Torres Design is part of this transformation, instilling the newly built resort destination with a casual chic vibe that is equally suited to both business and pleasure.
“For our design at The InterContinental D.C. at the Wharf, we drew inspiration from the Potomac River’s industrial waterfront heritage and harmonized it with a modern, international aesthetic.” says Ellen Bourque Johnson, Associate Principal & Design Director at Parker-Torres Design.
The waterfront’s influence can be seen in the sweeping views of the river that greet guests in the urban oasis’ lobby, with spectacular soaring ceilings and plush, relaxed furnishings to complement. Coupled with a striking sculptural staircase replete with a twenty foot high sparkling droplet chandelier, the public area evokes a sense of calm and tranquility that parallels the waterside. The magnificent staircase unifies the lobby, adjacent casual-upscale restaurant, Kith/Kin, and upper mezzanine meeting levels, serving as a high profile perch to see and be seen.
“We wanted to emphasize the Potomac River’s idyllic qualities in details like a dazzling, water-droplet inspired chandelier,” says Miriam Torres, Co-Founder of Parker-Torres Design.
Although the Intercontinental at the Wharf has a leisurely feeling, it boasts a stunning 5,000 square foot ballroom for corporate functions and large parties, with an exterior terrace facing the Potomac. Other public amenities include a 4,250 square foot spa, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a dynamic rooftop pool, a sky deck and a sky bar.
The hotel’s tower includes expansive guestrooms and suites with spa-inspired bathrooms; the interiors of each room exude a warm sophistication that harmonizes contemporary furnishings with a rich cool palette, echoing the earthy charcoal grays, watery blues and sandy beiges found along the Potomac shores. A luxury custom two-story penthouse suite with a wrap-around balcony beckons international celebrities and world leaders to experience the newly reinvigorated waterfront in Washington DC.
