| SCOTTSDALE, AZ - August 2018 | Parker-Torres Design looked to the peaceful and spiritual Sonoran Desert when renovating the main lobby at the Phoenician Scottsdale, a Luxury Collection Resort. The beauty and fortitude of the diverse flora and fauna that can thrive in its environment inspired an organic approach, as well as the resort’s location perched along the base of the iconic Camelback Mountain. By making the lobby bar a focal point and bringing indigenous elements into the design, whether it be as inspiration or in the use of locally sourced materials, Parker-Torres created a unique social space that marries gorgeous views of Paradise Valley with the historical influence of human settlement in the area.

“The line between the resort’s architecture and the mountain face is purposely blurred, mutually elevating the presence of both.” says Ellen Bourque Johnson, Associate Principal & Design Director at Parker-Torres Design. “We capitalized on nature’s beauty by eliminating any obstructions to the magnificent view of the valley, essentially bringing the outside in.”

By making the lobby bar with amazing views of Paradise Valley the lobby’s centerpiece, the interior design firm created a one of a kind social space that allows guests to enjoy a drink while taking in the fantastic landscape. A highlight in the space is the custom chandelier above the concierge desk inspired by the seed pods of the agave plant: the layering of the chandelier against a plaster wallcovering with a weathered texture is reminiscent of the plant’s appearance against the scorched desert floor. Another design element that reflects the desert’s influence is the lobby’s carpet, which incorporates rattlesnake textures.

“There is a beautiful moment that occurs when guests discover the influence of the desert all around them,” says Miriam Torres, Co-Founder of the firm. “Even the palette we used reflects the arid environment, with a burnt sienna similar to the color of Precambrian granite on the Camelback Mountain and brilliant greens replicating the shades seen in the Saguaro Cacti.”
